Bronson Creek
Help Oregon’s wildlife by
offsetting your
conference-related carbon emissions!
This year’s AZA conference theme is “Going Green.” Do your part by checking the Carbon Offset box when you register!
To make your carbon offset donation more meaningful, we picked a specific project as a destination for the funds---restoring habitats and protecting forests along Bronson Creek, a perennial stream about six miles northwest of the Oregon Zoo. The stream, riparian, and floodplain habitats are a high priority in the local Healthy Streams Plan, and are home to diverse wildlife species including beavers, deer, river otters, bobcats, herons, migratory birds, and at-risk red-legged frogs. The project will sequester carbon through permanent forest protection at the site. Your carbon offset donation will also help restore the floodplain, remove invasive plants, and improve habitat connectivity along the creek.
This project will help advance and institutionalize the offsetting of carbon and other ecological impacts in the zoo and aquarium community

Project Partners:
- The Oregon Zoo, host for the 2009 Annual AZA Conference, helped select the project and is working with AZA to encourage attendees to offset their conference impacts.
- Three Rivers Land Conservancy, a land trust in the Portland metro area, will provide long-term stewardship of the easement.
- Private landowners donated a conservation easement that permanently protects the forest, creek, and wildlife on their property. They will also enhance the habitat values.
- Clean Water Services, a Portland area wastewater/stormwater public utility, is paying the easement transaction costs, restoring riparian vegetation to reduce water temperature, and adding large wood to enhance instream habitat.
- The Marketplace For Nature is developing a multi-credit ecosystem marketplace to facilitate voluntary investments in ecosystem services including wildlife habitat, carbon, water quality / quantity, and wetlands. The Bronson Creek site is a pilot project to demonstrate how the Marketplace will work.
