Oregon Zoo Elephants’ Role in Science
Elephants and humans have a mutual history dating back at least 5,000 years. And thanks to conservation organizations like the Oregon Zoo, more has been learned about elephants in the past 30 years than had been known for the previous 5,000. Virtually everything we know about elephant reproductive physiology and cognitive abilities comes from zoo studies. In addition, zoos have made important discoveries about elephant communication and reproduction. These discoveries help scientists understand and protect the world’s elephants. The Oregon Zoo has been a partner in many of these significant breakthroughs.
