characteristics

Crown: dark purplish-blue
Nape: yellow side patch • back of nape reddish orange
Face: chin and throat and most of face reddish-orange
Back and Wings: : bright green • wing primaries tipped blackish
Underwing: black with yellow and green
Chin and Chest: reddish barred with dark blu
Belly: dark green
Thighs: yellow-green
Uppertail: dark green with yellowish tips
Undertail: yellowish and pinkish at the base
Beak: orange
Eye: iris orange
Legs: gray-green

Same coloration in both sexes.

Behaviour: Found mostly in pairs or small groups, sometimes with Yellow-and-Green Lorikeets • Vocalization: Shrill “kreet…kreet” in flight, high pitched “wee-oo-wee, variety of whistling notes and grating screech.

reproduction/life span

Little known from the wild • Breed perhaps Sept. to Oct • In captivity: incubation 27 days • fledging at 80 days.

diet

Wild: Nectar, pollen, fruit, blossoms and seeds
Zoo: 30% nectar, 30% fruit & vegetables (kale, grapes, apples, cantaloupe etc…), 30% bird of paradise pellets, 10% plants flowers and other novelty items.

habitat/range

Habitat: Found in forest edge, secondary forest, bushy open terrain, cultivated plots and towns, upland valleys but rarely in primary forest • Chiefly at 320-550 ft, but sometime up to 3300 ft.
Range: Sulawesi Island and surrounding islands in the Celebes, Indonesia.
