Batik

Batik | Oregon Zoo Orangutan

Zookeepers describe Batik as a shy, yet resilient orangutan. She was born at the Brookfield Zoo, and was hand-raised by humans because her mother became ill and could not care for her. She was later sent to live at the Sacramento Zoo, but did not get along well with the other orangutans in the group. She came to the Oregon Zoo in 1996 and has become close friends with both Inji and Kutai. Since Kutai’s arrival in 2001, Batik has become more dominant within the group, and sometimes challenges Inji.

Oregon Zoo keepers have great affection for Batik and describe her as compassionate and loving. Her large, almond-shaped eyes are a dead giveaway that she is a sweet and special lady.
