Summer Camp

Camps Information

 

Another wonderful summer of fun activity is fast approaching. Since 1983, our professional camp staff have been leading children in exploring and discovering the wonders of the Zoo through hands-on, interactive, experiential learning.

 

All camps include:
Guided zoo tours, animal visits in the classrooms, Wild Life Live show, visits to the family farm and pygmy goat kraal, lorikeet feeding, songs, games, stories, a train ride (except Penguin Camp), snacks, a journey back in time along the dinosaur trail, and a ZooCamp t-shirt.

3rd – 9th grade camps include a visit to the Washington Park.


ONLY for the week of June 30th to July 3rd, the following camps will run Monday through Thursday with reduced prices:

Registration for all camps will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration cannot be done over the phone.

If you would like to contribute to the Zoo Education Scholarship Fund, please add any amount to your registration fee. All scholarship donations are tax deductible.


For Students 4 Years old through entering Kindergarten
New this summer: Full day

Penguin Camp

Penguin Campers explore animal worlds using all their senses, experiencing the zoo like they've never experienced it before. Expert guides who know this age group will lead funtastic animal discoveries. Guided tours, animal visitors in the classroom, craft projects, songs and story-time fill each animal themed day. Quiet time will be available every afternoon for the full day Penguin Camp.

For Students Entering 1st Grade

Tiger Camp

Discover the natural world through guided exploration of all the zoo's magnificent animals. Tiger Campers look for similarities and differences in animals and their habitats as they explore colors, shapes and patterns that help animals hide. The "Wild Life Live" show, a train ride and animal visitors in the classroom add to the fun. Crafts, songs, stories and games fill each animal themed day.

For Students Entering 2nd Grade

Giraffe Camp

Exploration of the zoo fills each day along with visits with small mammals, birds and reptiles that come right into the classroom. Campers can touch and observe these animals while learning about special adaptations. Campers create toys for lorikeets and watch what happens when they get them. Then they head down to the African aviary and hand-feed birds; all fun and exciting ways to discover more about animals from around the world.

For Students Entering 3rd Grade

Rhino Camp

Wear comfortable shoes - this camp covers a lot of habitat! Rhino campers explore food webs and food chains, predator-prey relationships and human influences on nature.

Camp staff lead guided tours through: the Great Northwest, Stellar Cove, African Savanna and Rainforest, Asian Elephants, and the new Red Ape Reserve. "Amazing Bugs" presentations, "create your own bug" craft and an Insect Zoo tour complete this world-wide exploration of animals.

Rhino Schedule:

For Students Entering 4th Grade

Otter Camp

Habitats of the world are explored in this camp through guided tours of all the zoo's exhibits. For even more fun these campers prepare a special animal treat then watch what happens when a keeper gives it to river otters.

Otter campers spend time in the family farm participating in health check-ups with goats for a genuine feel for what it's like to be a zookeeper. Otter campers also work with wool from the zoo’s sheep to do a little weaving.

For Students Entering 5th Grade

Cougar Camp

Get the inside scoop about zoo animal care and what the zoo is doing for wildlife conservation in Oregon and around the world.

These campers make a special animal treat for a select exhibit and watch how the animals react. A special behind the scenes tour of the Birds of Prey mews provides a close-up view of animal care.

New this year: Thursday night features an EVENING with dinosaurs including dinner and a private, behind the scenes, night-time tour.

For Students Entering 6th Grade 

Animal Investigators

What's it like to work in a zoo? This camp answers that question. Animal Investigators focus on zoo operations and the care of endangered animals through the eyes of a zookeeper while going behind the scenes of selected exhibits. An OVERNIGHT stay at the zoo is the culminating event for this camp. More behind-the-scenes tours are included and an evening tour of select exhibits gives these campers a unique, insider's view of how the zoo works.

OwlSchedule:
Monday - Wednesday 9 am - 4 pm,
Thursday 9 am overnight to Friday 4 pm.
Includes an overnight stay, Thursday dinner, Friday breakfast
and Friday lunch.

For Students Entering 7th - 8th Grade

Wild Design

Secrets to building and operating a zoo are revealed through designing a zoo! Zoo staff, designers and builders reveal what it takes to create spaces for animals as different as tarantulas, tigers or elephants. Special behind the scenes tours divulge the insides of exhibits. With all this inside information these campers build a model of their ideal zoo. An OVERNIGHT trip to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where you'll sleep with the sharks, includes more behind the scenes tours.

For Students Entering 8th-9th Grade
New in 2008

ZSI: Zoo Science Investigators

ZSI campers use cool gadgets that animal scientists use to solve the mysteries of wildlife lives.

Camera traps, radio tracking and bat detectors are just some of the sleuthing tools that will be used. This is real science stuff real scientists use to reveal what’s going on with animals, in the zoo and in the wild.

Use these tools and your new expertise to solve some real world animal puzzles. An EVENING at the zoo takes these wildlife sleuths on an after-hours investigation of zoo animal activity. Includes Thursday dinner.
