Grizzly Bears

THE FACTS:

THE PROBLEM:

  • Before Europeans arrived, grizzly bears roamed across most of the western US, ranging as far south as Mexico. Today, grizzlies live in less than 2% of their former range within the lower 48 states and number around 1,100 bears (less than 2% of their original population). The remaining bears live in small pockets including the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, and the North Cascades. It is estimated that only 5-20 bears currently live in the North Cascades. To find out more about the North Cascades grizzly recovery efforts, check out Conservation Northwest.
