Meadow
Meadow,
a Washington pygmy rabbit, is the mother of Larkin
and Leslie. Weighing less than a pound, the pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus
idahoensis)
is the smallest rabbit in North America. In May 2006, Meadow was voted
Zoo Mother of the Year. "Meadow
is a great choice for zoo mother of the year," said Oregon Zoo
Director, Tony Vecchio. "This
is the first time we've had a winner from one of our conservation projects."
Typically,
pygmy rabbits are brown or slate gray with short, white-margined ears
and
a small
tail.
Several traits set them apart from cottontails (Sylvilagus) and jackrabbits
(Lepus). Pygmies are the only North American rabbits that dig burrows.
They also give alarm calls and make other vocalizations, indicating
some degree of sociality.
