Mittens For Bears
Oregon Zoo Malayan sun
bear keeper Amy Hash has been a strong advocate for speaking out
about the plight of bears in the wild. She made zoo staff and volunteers
aware of a request by the conservation group Animals
Asia Foundation for mittens for their rescued bears to
wear during surgery to keep warm.
Zoo volunteers offered to knit, if a pattern could be developed, so
zoo staff contacted a local yarn shop for assistance. Once KGW's Tracy
Barry became involved, the project took on a life of its own.
