Us Save Sea Otters and Other Ocean Critters
Did
you know the last Oregon sea otter was killed more than 100 years ago? Once
inhabiting the entire west coast of North America, sea otters were
nearly hunted to extinction for their thick furs. Now there are only
small, sparse populations in Alaska, Canada, California, and Washington
State.
Scientists have identified these curious and playful critters as a 'keystone'
species. In the food chain, sea otters control populations of marine mollusks
such as sea urchins. Without sea otters, the sea urchin
population has proliferated, destroying kelp beds - underwater forest
havens for many other sea creatures.
We hope to someday help reintroduce these marine mammals into their native
habitat on the Oregon Coast!
