Endangered Species
Did you that the last resident sea otter in Oregon was killed more than 100 years ago? Once inhabiting the entire west coast of North America, sea otters were nearly hunted to extinction for their thick furs and are now listed as an endangered species.
There are approximately 1,372 marine species on the threatened and endangered species list. Although, since 80% of the ocean is still unexplored and scientist feel there may be as many as 9 million undiscovered species, thousands more endangered and threatened marine species may exist. Therefore, knowing that much of the ocean is undiscovered, destroying the ocean is like burning the library before we even read the books!
Loss of habitat, the spread of disease, pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices are some of the threats facing endangered species today and recovery of these species are rarely straight forward. When a keystone species such as the sea otter are removed their absence influences many other marine species and can affect the ecosystem as a whole.
Help sea otters and other marine species feel welcome! Being conscience of the water you use, the fish you eat, and the garbage you throw away can all help save many endangered species, some you may not even know about.
