Seafood Watch

Penguins We have hit our limit! There are only so many fish in the ocean, and our current consumption habits have discovered the ocean's limit. This is problematic not only for the fish in the ocean, but also for the fishermen and their families who rely on an abundance of fish to make a living.

Unsustainable fishing practices worldwide have been damaging our oceans by depleting fish populations, damaging marine habitats, and polluting the water. Overfishing drastically lowers the fish population by catching fish faster than they can reproduce. Bottom trawlers catch fish by dragging large nets across the ocean floor destroying marine habitats for many species. Bycatch, fish and animals accidently caught in fishing gear, disturbs the ocean's food web by discarding fish that are often important to another.

Sadly, many of the marine animals we depend on us to sustain their beautiful ocean habitats. By joining the Oregon Zoo, and our environmentally conscious partners, we can help bring seafood awareness to our communities, and bring troubled seafood back from the brink of extinction.
