Tide Pools

Starfish A tide pool is a difficult environment to live. Spending part of the time under the water and part of it exposed to the air makes surviving on the rocky shore a challenge and we are not making it any easier.

Humans are still the greatest threat to coastal tide pools. Tide pools are on the edge of the extremes, so they are the first to feel the effects of temperature changes or pollution. Growing coastal development encroaches on marine habitat and enthusiastic tourists often remove tide pool species, unintentionally disrupting the ecosystem. Building roads near the coast adds toxic pollutants to the near-shore environment.

Though tide pool creatures survive harsh conditions, they are easily hurt or disturbed by human visitors. You can help preserve Oregon's tidal waters by abiding to tide pool etiquette.
