UGANDA
Kasese Wildlife Conservation Awareness Organization
Asaba Mukobi, an Oregon Zoo animal care staff member, created the
Kasese Wildlife Conservation Awareness Organization in 2002. This
organization, based in Mukobi’s home town of Kasese, Uganda,
was created to educate school children and communities about the
many different species that make up the wildlife inhabiting nearby
Queen Elizabeth Park. Funding will allow this project to increase
the number of schools and communities reached.
ZIMBABWE
Matabeleland Leopard and Cheetah Research Program
The Matabeleland Leopard and Cheetah research study is surveying
the distribution and status of leopards and cheetahs in Zimbabwe
to determine the extent of predation on livestock and make recommendations
to the National Parks which will inform management plans.
ETHIOPIA & KENYA
Grevy's Zebra Trust
The Grevy's Zebra Trust, an independent wildlife conservation
organization, has been established to address the urgent need to
conserve the small remaining three populations of Grevy's zebras.
The organization will educate the local community about current Grevy's
zebra conservation issues such as ongoing poaching, securing water
and grazing resources, and developing a disease outbreak response
strategy with the Kenya Wildlife Service Veterinary Unit.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Lukuru Wildlife Research Project
The Lukuru Wildlife Research Project is working with the local people
to teach them about conservation of bonobos and their habitats. Bonobos
are one of Africa’s most endangered primates and live in only
one area of the Congo region. This project will help educate the
local people on how to share the land and live with the primates.
