Humboldt Penguin Awareness Program
The Oregon Zoo has supported various aspects of Humboldt Penguin
conservation since 1998. Past grants awarded allowed Areas Costeras

community education and awareness program in both Chincha and Pisco
provinces in Peru. The current grant allows for the team to expand
their program to include the Ica Province, increasing the number
of local schools involved in the program.

Jaguars as Landscape Detectives
The Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas is studying jaguars
as landscape detectives. The species need large, high quality habitats
in which to live. A landscape detective can show how to plan and
manage reserves and large interconnected eco-regions by evaluating
what the jaguars have excess of and what they are lacking. The project
team plans to develop a network of wild core reserves for the upper
Paraná-Paranapanema region. Once the team makes a conservation
model of what the jaguars show, they will expand to other areas of
Brazil.
