About the Education Department

Education Makes A Great Zoo.

ZAP team membersThe Education staff at the Zoo is dedicated to inspiring the community to create a better future for wildlife.

As the largest environmental education organization in the state, we share our knowledge about conservation with millions of people. By helping others to learn about and take action in activities like recycling, energy conservation and backyard "naturescaping”, we encourage personal responsibility and actions for helping to save animals from extinction.

The zoo's education department has developed an extensive array of education programs that enhance visitors’ enjoyment and appreciation of wildlife and the zoo. These nationally recognized programs use a variety of methods and materials to serve the learning needs of a diverse range of audiences.

Each year over 600,000 Zoo visitors enjoy a variety of programs such as Discover Birds! shows and demonstrations at the Trillium Creek Family Farm during the summer season. Younger visitors get up close and personal learning to care about animals at the Little Zoo and African Goat Kraal. Anytime of year one is likely to meet our trained education volunteers giving Animal Talks at the exhibits.

For those who want a more in depth experience there are classes and camps throughout the year for kids, families and adults.

We take our education messages out into the community, to school children and seniors. Our Zoo Animal Presenters, the ZAP TEAM, take animals to youth groups and community centers. These underserved youth also help with UNO, a program to introduce younger urban children to the excitement of outdoor camping and nature study. We serve the schools and educators with curriculum, kits, training and programs, reaching an audience of over 150,000 students and teachers.
