The Zoo is a great place to take pictures of animals! Join professional wildlife photographer Michael Wilhelm to learn some of the tricks of the trade for getting consistently good shots. Staff from Pro Photo Supply will be on hand to answer technical questions to help you get the most out of your equipment. (SLR camera preferred.)

Wild Life Live - Show Programs- FILLED

The animals of
Wild Life Live are the Zoo performers. These incredible birds are both beautiful
and well trained. Eagles, hawks, parrots, owls and more will be on hand
to pose for some truly great pictures. Where else could you get close
enough to count the feathers on a bald eagle's head?
Photo skills:
Intermediate to Advanced (Must bring SLR - film or digital. Telephoto
lens 200mm or greater and flash would be beneficial.)
Colorful Birds

Red beaks, orange
feet and bright blue feathers can all be found on birds at the Zoo. You’ll
have a chance to shoot photos in two of the Zoo's aviaries.
The Vollum aviary is home to golden-breasted starlings and violaceous turacos
from tropical Africa.
Blue-streaked lories, green-napped lorikeets and many others that live
in Lorikeet Landing are sure to make for some stunning photos.

Zoo Photography 101

Taking pictures of animals can be hard. Taking pictures of animals through glass and wire can be even harder. Learn some of the techniques for getting good animal photos with your digital camera. Start in the classroom to learn how to avoid reflections in the glass and how to make mesh blend with the background. Explore topics including managing your digital workflow from snapping pictures to presenting them to your friends. Finish out in the Zoo trying out your new skills. This class is an hour longer than the others and has different pricing.

Zoo Photography for Teens

Nurture your teenagers creative side and expose them to the wonders of wildlife with a photography class at the Zoo. We’ll explore the fundamentals of composition and light and work hard on increasing observation skills to capture the elusive, but so very rewarding, peak of the action. Nature photography is our theme and we will learn how photography techniques for capturing wildlife work well for sports enthusiasts too.

Get your kids hooked on observing nature through the lens of a camera. In addition to increasing their observation skills, children will learn the basics of good composition and light, how to select between the various camera modes, and the importance of timing their shot to capture peak action. Parents can join in too and develop an activity the whole family can share.
