Meet Our Polar Bears
Conrad
Conrad is the only male polar bear at the Oregon Zoo. He is unmistakable as the largest of our three bears, standing at an awe-inspiring 9 1/2 feet and weighing between 1,020 and 1,150 pounds.
He boasts a hearty appetite and can eat between 8 and 20 pounds of food per day! After a heavy meal, Conrad enjoys a nap on a bed he makes from burlap and carwash strips that the zookeepers put on exhibit as part of polar bear enrichment.
He came to Oregon from the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina where he was
born in December of 1984. On December 28, 2007, we celebrated his 23rd Birthday!
Tasul
Tasul is Conrad's petite sister who also came from the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina. She stands 7 feet tall and her weight ranges between 520 and 680 pounds.
In a day's time she can eat anywhere between 5 and 12 pounds of food. When satiated, Tasul loves to play with new toys. Of all three bears, Tasul is the most vocal.
How to tell Tasul apart from Yugyan? Tasul's rear legs are shorter, while her feet are wider than Yugyan's.
Yugyan ("U-Young" meaning Northern Lights)
Yugyan is the youngest of three bears, born in December 1985 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio.
She stands 8 feet tall, one foot taller than Tasul, but her weight ranges between 480 and 650 pounds, giving her a more slender appearance. She eats healthy 5 to 12 pounds of food per day.
When the zookeepers put large piles of ice on exhibit, it is very likely Yugyan can be seen rolling around in the ice, enjoying herself tremendously.
