Steller Sea Lions
Go to where the sea meets the shore, at Oregon's edge. There you'll find
noisy groups of Steller's sea lions abandon the land and slip into coastal
waters. It's an ocean home rich with nutrients and busy with fish -- the
Stellers' food of choice.
In a deep pool surrounded by rocky, grass-covered cliffs, Steller's sea lions
swim and dive, or haul out in the sun on one of two islands. You can watch
these magnificent animals from above the water where you'll be separated
only by mesh, and through a giant window in an underwater grotto where
you'll be able to see how beautifully these marine mammals are adapted
to life in the ocean.
Steller sea lions breed along the Northwest coast and their offshore rookeries
are protected by state and federal law. Researchers study these top predators
to determine the health of the near shore ocean ecosystem in which they
live.
