Visayan Warty Pigs - Opened Spring 2006
Babirusa Pigs - Opened May 2007
Visayan
Warty Pigs Visayan warty pigs are known for their remarkable
manes, which make them look like the punk rockers of the pig world.
They are also great rototillers. The pigs are like little tillers,
turning over the soil with their snouts as they forage for food.
Every few days all of the exhibit substrate is turned over by these
industrious pigs. In addition to open areas for foraging, there are
logs and plants, mostly bamboo and grasses, planted in the exhibit
for enrichment and to evoke the fragile Philippine habitat that the
pigs call home.
The exhibit
is between
the education classrooms and across from Primates. Oregon Zoo is
one of only a handful of zoos around the country to have the unique
pigs.
The zoo hopes to
eventually develop a breeding program.
Babirusa
pigs, which are found only on the island of Sulawesi (and a few small
neighboring islands) in Indonesia, are great swimmers. Nearly hairless,
these pigs take very good care of their skin, wallowing in mud and
taking frequent baths. Their new exhibit features a small pool, allowing
the pigs the opportunity to do just that. In addition to the pool,
the exhibit has grassy areas, bamboo and other plants intended to
evoke the fragile tropical habitat of the Babirusa.
