- There are
five sub-species of tigers:
1. Amur (Siberian) tigers 2. Bengal
tigers 3. Indochinese tigers 4. South China tigers 5. Sumatran tigers
- Tigers
can run up to 35 miles per hour (only for initial short distance).
- The life
span of a tiger in the wild is approximately 10 to late teens, possibly
20 years, depending on individual and/or the "health" of their environment.
- Zoo
tigers live to be between 16 and 20 years old. There are some rare instances of
an individual reaching 30.
- Like
a human fingerprint, no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes on their coats.
- Tigers are excellent
swimmers and can easily cross rivers and lakes 3.7-5 miles (6-8 km) wide.
- Tigers fail at
least 90% of the time in catching prey during hunts, but rate can be lower depending
on prey species.....they also can be opportunistic in usurping a kill from others
or possibly going after some forms of carrion.
- Tigers
sleep 18 20 hours per day. In the wild, sleeping a lot is normal and appropriate
when not on the "hunt", but it can vary with the season and environmental
effects.
