Animal Behavior and Environmental Enrichment Internship
Its
a jungle out there...Why not prepare for it with an internship at the
zoo?
Job
Description: We are looking for undergraduate or
graduate level college students wishing to earn course credits
for work with the zoo's living collections. Animal Behavior and
Environmental Enrichment interns will have the opportunity to
work with animal care and science staff in the design and implementation
of behavioral research and/or implementation and evaluation of
various types of environmental enrichment.
**Prospective
Animal Behavior interns are advised that these often involve analyses
of animal behavior captured on videotape or viewed from a blind, video
monitor, or public viewing area. Often, coding or analysis of previously
transcribed data is involved. A "hands-on" experience with
the animals in the zoo's collection is not a component of these internships.
What
we offer...
Unfortunately, we cannot offer a salary, but we do offer the following
benefits:
- The chance
to develop your talents and skills.
- Experience
that will look great on your resume.
- A progressive
management style that allows interns to take on a great deal of
responsibility
and provides a supportive, stimulating and fun workplace.
- Letters
of reference for future job opportunities.
- The zoo...you
get to visit every day!
What
you would do as an intern...
The Oregon Zoo is recognized as a leader in the areas of environmental
enrichment, assessment of animal welfare, and the study of animal behavior
in a captive setting. Opportunities for interns in this project area
include working with animal care and science staff in the design, implementation,
and evaluation of various types of environmental enrichment and collecting
and analyzing data from ongoing behavioral research projects. There is
also the opportunity to carry out basic animal behavior research under
the direction of the zoo's scientific staff. However, such research projects
must contribute to the zoo's animal care program, be accomplishable during
the time frame of the internship, and require both prior approval and
a final project report. To be considered for an Animal Behavior and Environmental
Enrichment Internship, a student must be receiving academic credit from
or be fulfilling an academic requirement of an accredited Institution
of Higher Education. It is the responsibility of the intern to ensure
that all university or college requirements are met to receive credit.
