Curation
and Management of Zoological Collections Internships:
Animal Registrar Intern
Job
Description...
Registrar
work will expose students to the requirements and standards for creating
small population records, obtaining and using the animal
data essential for conservation and breeding programs and management
of zoological collections, and the importance of such records in the
state, federal and international permitting process.
What
we offer...
Unfortunately, we cannot offer a salary, but we do offer the following
benefits:
- The chance to develop your talents and skills.
- Experience that will
look great on your resume.
- A progressive management style that allows
interns to take on a great deal of responsibility and provide a supportive,
stimulating and
fun work place.
- Letters of reference for future job opportunities.
- The
Zoo…you get to visit every day!
What
you would do as an intern with the Registrar...
Assist in collation and data entry for species in the different areas
of the zoo and the various conservation programs. This process documents
the history of the animals including breeding, husbandry, diet, basic
medical information, infant development, and behavior. Research and
organize historical data to be used in conservation programs for species
studbooks and Species Survival Plans managed through the Association
of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Interns
will gain experience with the database required for use in AZA accredited
zoos, ARKS. It is beneficial to
have experience with Excel
and Access. Students with database experience might also work on special
data management projects. The Registrar internship will be useful for
students of biology, zoology, fish and wildlife studies, museum studies,
history, or even animal-loving computer science students.
We offer
internships throughout the year. Registrar internships are part-time
and schedules
can be flexible, depending on the intern's
objectives.
Hours could be full-time some days and part-time others, Monday through
Thursday.
