Horticulture Internship
Its
a jungle out there...Why not prepare for it with an internship at the
zoo?
Job
Description: We are looking for undergraduate or graduate
level college students wishing to earn course credits for work with the
Zoo's living collections. Commitments are a minimum of 10 weeks at a
minimum of 8 hours per week.
General Internships:
A general horticulture internship would involve exposure to garden maintenance,
animal enrichment, habitat simulation, planning and design, landscape
construction, and irrigation installation and repair.
Specialized Internships:
The Zoo has a vast botanical collection and can provide internship projects
related to accessing, labeling, and organizing collection records. Other
projects may be available in conservation, horticulture education, or
landscape architecture. Special projects will be considered upon request
if they further the goals of the horticulture section and can be accomplished
in the time frame of the internship.
What
we offer...
Unfortunately, we cannot offer a salary, but we do offer the following
benefits:
- The chance
to develop your talents and skills.
- Experience
that will look great on your resume.
- A progressive
management style that allows interns to take on a great deal of responsibility
and provides a supportive, stimulating and fun work place.
- Letters
of reference for future job opportunities.
- The Zoo...you
get to visit every day!
What
you would do as an intern...
These internships are specifically designed for students studying horticulture,
botany, urban forestry, landscape construction and maintenance, or landscape
architecture. The Zoo's horticulture staff works closely with animal
care and conservation staff to provide a naturalistic and safe environment
for the zoo's animal collection and to provide enrichment items and specialized
food items for selected species.
Horticulture
Internships are physically demanding and interns may be subject to
a variety of environmental factors.
Depending on the nature
of the assignment, routine tasks involve frequent bending, stretching,
climbing, and lifting. Interns will be required to work outdoors and
must, therefore, be able to tolerate extreme weather conditions, including
heat and cold, rain, snow, and humidity. Interns are also subjected
to strong odors, dust, hay, and animal hair/fur/dander. Please take
these
things into consideration when applying.
How
to apply...
Send your
resume, application form, and a cover letter that answers the following
questions:
- What
are your career goals and how would this internship help you achieve
them?
- What
kind of course work and/or experience do you have that would make
you a valuable intern?
- In what
areas are you most interested in attaining experience through this internship?
From the
