Enrichment for Penguins

Penguin Food- Penguins are excellent divers, and feed on shrimp, krill, and squid.

Families- Penguins are found swimming in the ocean in large groups and avoiding predators such as Leopard Seals. Penguins mate in pairs in the breeding season, each mate taking turns feeding the chick.

Location- Found in the southern hemisphere, ranging from the equator to Antarctica.

Enrichment provided at the Oregon Zoo

  • Balloons filled with water and fish and frozen overnight.
  • Feeding from the bottom of the pool- fishes are served at the bottom of the pool
  • The Penguins Exhibit design provides many different materials (like foam and concrete) to walk on, provides many bridges and nesting places
  • Keeper interaction by feeding and training- for the human touch
  • Simulated ocean tides
  • Seagulls that share their exhibit- provides a natural biome
