Enrichment for Polar Bears

Polar Bear Food - Polar bears are omnivores. This means that they can eat not only meat, but flowers, cornstalks, blackberries, blueberries, mangoes, and more.

Families - Polar bears tend to be solitary, or alone, except in the breeding season, when they find mates.

Location- Polar bears are commonly found close to the artic circle at the top of the globe.

Enrichment at the Oregon Zoo

  • Cornstalks placed around in exhibit
  • Flowers given as treats
  • Boomer balls (read common enrichment for details)
  • Ice treats (read common enrichment for details)
  • Thanksgiving pie- a pie of fruits and veggies with frozen water crust served chilly Jack-o-lanterns made of pumpkins
  • Mangoes - polar bears love them!
  • Peanut butter, ketchup, mustard, and honey hidden in holes around the exhibit
  • Raw bones given twice a week
  • Treats smeared on exhibit windows for licking
  • Sand pit to play in Adjustable feeder ball of car wash sheets
  • Snow shavings
  • Plastic toys to play with and rampage on "Maternity den" made out of cardboard
  • Dried chilies, pineapple, and sunflower seeds given occasionally
  • Cardboard and paper Mache Igloo usually offered during Holidays
  • Conrad the bear snacking on pineapples.
