Enrichment for Sun Bears

SunBear Food- Sun bears are omnivorous and eat almost anything, including birds, termites, plant shoots, honey, berries, and small mammals.

Families- Usually found in pairs. A mother gives birth to 2 blind cubs that grow fast.

Location- S.E Asian rainforest- Burma, Indonesia, and surrounding countries.

Enrichment at the Oregon Zoo
  • Hammock made of fire hose for sleep and play
  • Ball to play in and hide food
  • Boomer ball (see common enrichment)
  • Cardboard ginger bread houses
  • Frozen popsicle treats
  • Paper Mache bats
  • Ice treats
  • "Tree" structure to climb and play on
  • Small log with holes drilled in it to hide foods such as honey and ketchup and hung on a string
  • Bones given twice a week
  • Small food items such as raisins, seeds, and chopped fruit scattered around the exhibit.
  • Sunflower seeds, dried chilies, and mangos given occasionally.
