Bam-Bam

Bam-Bam was born at the Bronx Zoo in 1993 and came to us from Jackson, Miss., with his mate, Jackie, nine years ago. Two of the pair's offspring, Valentino and Pebbles, lived in the Flooded Forest exhibit with them until leaving for another zoo. Bam-Bam and Jackie have had a total of four offspring, most recently a male born April 27. Bam-Bam is a very attentive father and mate, protecting his young by puffing his hair out to appear twice his size. One of his babies has even imitated Bam-Bam's way of wrinkling his forehead when defending his family. Bam-Bam is a very intelligent and active monkey, playing a huge part in the development of his babies.

Samar

Samar was born at the San Diego Zoo on Aug. 25, 2002. Wary animals by nature, Visayan warty pigs are native to the Philippines and highly endangered. One endearing trait of the male warty pig is its mane, the seasonal hair that grows up its neck and onto its head, resembling the hair of a rock star when fully in bloom. Samar has a glorious hairdo for part the year and is bald for another part, with a wide variety of hairstyles in between. Our guests love it, calling Samar the fifth Beatle, Elvis or Cue Ball, as appropriate. Like all pigs, Samar is highly intelligent, very interactive with the keeper staff, and always hungry. His expressive snout, the tool he most uses to touch the world, can upturn any hidden treat with skill and comical grace.

Tusko

Tusko was born wild in Thailand around 1971 and came to our zoo in June 2005 on breeding loan. He is a very important addition to our herd: his non-related status makes him our prime breeder, and his aptitude for the task is apparent, as evidenced last August by the birth of his son Samudra. Tusko is extremely intelligent and very gentle with female elephants -- and boy, do the cows love him! He is very experienced, calm and truly a force of nature: nearly seven tons of stout, rippled muscle. Tusko has a confidence about him, and he is a quick study in learning the routines for his daily care. Our hope is he will be a father again, and soon!
