2008 Father of the Year Vote

Vote for zoo Father of the Year from the following:

Atishwin
Atishwin, a California condor

Attentive might be a bit of an understatement when describing Atishwin, the California condor's first experience parenting last year at the Oregon Zoo's Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation.

The chick was the first that Atishwin and his mate, Ojai, produced together, and -- though Ojai has produced and raised several chicks in the past -- it was Atishwin's first chick ever.

Both parents stayed very close to the young condor during its first days. Female and male condors take turns feeding and warming their offspring -- but even during their "off time," Atishwin and Ojai have preferred lying next to each other to taking a break outside the nest cave.

And Atishwin even took it a step further. At one point, he let Ojai scoot the chick under her for brooding, but then apparently felt a little left out -- so he went and retrieved the chick's empty eggshell and settled on that so he could have something to brood as well.

Kiku
Kiku, a colobus monkey

Kiku, a colobus monkey, was born Jan. 27, 1991 in Little Rock Arkansas. He lived at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago from July 1992 before arriving at Oregon Zoo Oct. 10, 2002. Kiku and his mate Mali produced Oscar on July 15, 2004. Since Mali was slow to figure out motherhood, Kiku initially carried Oscar. Once Mali learned what to do, the family group has been together. Kiku and Mali have since produced two other offspring, three-year-old Maliki and one-year-old Delu.

Colobus monkeys are a threatened species in their native region of eastern Africa due to habitat encroachment by humans and a loss of habitat when forests are cut down. There are four different species of black and white colobus monkey; the Oregon Zoo houses the guereza (Colobus guereza), which has a pouched stomach adapted to leaf digestion.
