Want to make a primate happy?
Sunday, Oct. 7 is Quilts for Primates day. The Sewing Team of the Volunteer Enrichment Team have made quilts for primates and other animals at the zoo for several years. Primates like orangutans and chimpanzees use the quilts for nest building - a natural behavior. They also enjoy wrapping themselves in the quilts. Pockets sewn into the quilts give keepers a place to put treats, which encourages the primates' natural foraging instincts.
From 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. meet at classrooms 1 and 2 across from Bear Walk Cafe to design your own quilt block and talk with volunteers about quilts for primates. Visitors will also have two opportunities to see primates use the quilts.
