Water

Water is essential for all living things.

A simple water tray, such as the bottom saucer of a planter, is easily accessible for all animals.

  • Birds will love to visit a bath for cleaning and drinking. Try setting up different baths in different locations, because birds have their preferences!
  • Water at ground level is also important since ground animals, like rabbits, cannot share in the luxury of a birdbath.

A more permanent alternative is a pond. You can install a pre-built pond or call in an expert for a more elaborate installation. Either way you'll have a perfect spot for wildlife of all kinds to enjoy, not to mention a perfect spot for the family to relax by! When planning a pond, make sure at least one side has a gently sloping short to allow anything that has gotten into it – wildlife or kids - to safely get out!

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has some great tips for putting water into your backyard habitat.

The Natural Resource Conservation Service also has a thorough explanation of setting up a pond for your backyard conservation efforts.

A birdbath requires upkeep: scrubbing the bath and changing water to keep it clean.
