Four summer evenings at the zoo offer family fun and music with a festival flair

Over the course of four Wednesdays this summer, the Oregon Zoo is offering visitors a little something extra: Sunset at the Zoo, presented by Banfield Pet Hospital, features extended evening hours packed with live music and entertainment, activities for kids and the chance to get to know animals active during twilight hours.

The zoo's food outlets will be staying open late as well, offering a selection of local beer and wines for the adults.

"Sunset at the Zoo offers families a chance to spend time together outside, enjoy some great food, and learn about wildlife in a fun, festival-like setting," said Teri Dresler, interim zoo director. "And it would not be possible without the generous support of Banfield Pet Hospital, which is building on a year-round commitment as a signature partner of the zoo.

"At Banfield Pet Hospital, we know that having a pet can play a critical role in kids' lives, including improving self-esteem, increasing social engagement and reducing stress levels," said Daniel Aja, DVM, chief medical officer at Banfield Pet Hospital. "This is why we're excited to participate in Sunset at the Zoo again this year to continue educating families on their critical role in providing their pets high quality preventive care."

Veterinarians and vet technicians from Banfield will be on hand, presiding over a "Pet Patch-Up" station for stuffed animals in need of some TLC. Checkups, shots, chiropractic adjustments and emergency patchwork will be performed on the spot and free of charge.

In addition, Banfield will be bringing back its rousing "Howl and Meow" contest, where kids can show off their best dog and cat impressions. Banfield veterinarians will judge the contest and hand out prizes to the winners.

Sunset at the Zoo takes place every other Wednesday in July and August (July 8 and 22; Aug. 5 and 19). Gates stay open until 8 p.m., and visitors may remain on zoo grounds until 8:30. Admission is free for zoo members, with regular zoo admission prices in effect for non-members.
