Activity: Otter math
To stay warm and full of energy, sea otters must eat a quarter of their weight each day!
How much you would need to eat if you were a sea otter? Let's find out:
Start by weighing yourself or estimating your weight. Take your weight and divide by four. Convert your weight to ounces. (1 pound = 16 ounces). Let's imagine your favorite food item is a hamburger and that an average hamburger weighs 4 ounces. If you were a sea otter, how many hamburgers would you need to eat every day?
Activity: Build a raft
Sea otters rest in groups called a rafts. To keep from drifting away from each other, sea otters will wrap themselves in seaweed, forming something that looks like a raft.
Using materials (e.g. cork, twigs, straws, string) from around your house, yard or recycling bin, see if you can construct a raft that floats in water. Be creative! Send us a picture of your raft floating in water.
