Critter Club

Join us for this fun introduction to the wonderful world of animals! Each class includes hands-on activities, snack, story time and an animal visit (or another type of special zoo experience). Zoo admission beyond class time is not included.


All Aboard!

Climb into the cab of a locomotive and chug on down the tracks of the Washington Park and Zoo Railway. Meet a train engineer, visit our roundhouse, take a ride on a handcar, and learn about train safety. Photo opportunities abound!

What goes bump  in the night?

Nocturnal animals, that’s what! Meet some night animals up close and learn how they use their senses to move around in the dark. Make a flashlight for safe wildlife viewing at night in your own backyard.

What's for breakfast?

From bugs to berries, see how keepers prepare healthy meals for our animals during a visit to our kitchen. Help prepare a diet and watch an animal forage for food. Dissect an owl pellet and discover what owls eat for breakfast.

Junior zoo vet

Dress up like a veterinarian and discover what it’s like to care for animals at a zoo. Watch an animal get a check-up. Peer inside the operating room at our animal hospital and learn how we care for our animals.

Birds of a feather

What makes a bird a bird? Find out when you meet a bird up close. Explore bird beaks, feet and feathers through a variety of interactive activities. Make a bird feeder for hours of bird watching fun in your backyard.

Registration Information

  • The Critter Club classes are designed for the specified age level. Please do not bring unregistered siblings to the classes.
  • Zoo admisison beyond the class time is not included.
  • A snack is included in each class; however, we are unable to accommodate food allergies or dietary restrictions. If your child has allergies or special dietary needs, please pack your own snacks.
  • Zoo For All eligible families qualify for a discounted rate on the 3-5 year old classes. Rates are $15, $8 additional child (maximum of two children per adult.) Please contact the Education Office to register.
