Dinner to celebrate Packy

Guests invited to join Oregon Zoo experts for evening of fine dining, wine

On April 14, 1962, Portland was thrust into the international spotlight when Packy became the first elephant born in the Western Hemisphere in nearly 44 years. On the eve of the famous elephant’s 50th birthday, Packy fans can relive that excitement and enjoy a fine meal at the Oregon Zoo’s Dine and Discover event, Friday, April 13, beginning at 6 p.m.

Dine and Discover pairs an intimate food-and-wine experience with a chance to hear from some of the zoo’s renowned animal professionals. In keeping with the event’s theme – “Celebrating 50 years with Packy” – experts will discuss Packy’s life in Portland, elephant care and training, and the future for elephants at the Oregon Zoo. The event will also feature a special tribute to the late Dr. Matthew Maberry, the zoo’s first veterinarian, who famously attended Packy’s birth in 1962.

Mike Keele, Oregon Zoo director of elephant habitats, will lead guests on a journey through Packy’s life and times, and discuss the zoo’s pioneering role in Asian elephant research. Zoo director Kim Smith will describe the vision for the zoo’s new elephant habitat. The evening will conclude with a tribute to Dr. Maberry by Rep. Kurt Schrader.

The evening’s multi-course menu features classic dishes and incorporates some of Packy’s favorite foods. Dinner begins with a selection of canapés, followed by a wedge salad with Roquefort dressing. The entrée features a choice of trout almandine, short ribs prepared bourguignon style, or eggplant parmesan Napoleon. A selection of miniature sweets will round out the evening’s offerings. Fine wines from Owen Roe Winery will be paired with each course.

Cost for Dine and Discover is $100 for zoo members and $125 for non-members. Tickets are on sale through Monday, April 9 and seating is limited. RSVP online or call 503-220-2785.

Proceeds from this event support the Oregon Zoo’s animal welfare, conservation and education programs and activities.
