Carpe P.M.: Zoo extends hours for 'Twilight Tuesdays'

June 16, 2017 - 3:35pm

Three summer evenings with a festival flair and deep admission discount

The Oregon Zoo is offering visitors a little something extra this summer: Twilight Tuesdays, featuring late hours in the park at a deep discount.

Twilight Tuesdays, presented by Banfield Pet Hospital, take place the third Tuesday of the month from June through August (June 20, July 18 and Aug. 15). Each event features animals that are active at dusk, fun activities for families, pettable animals and live entertainment. Zoo admission is just $5 per person after 4 p.m. (free for zoo members).

The series debut on June 20 features boot-stomping, gritty Americana music from Ashleigh Flynn and the Hazeltines. Other upcoming Twilight Tuesday performers include the Ben Rice Band (deeply rooted traditional and original blues) and the Pearls (harmonious alt-country and Western swing).

Kids are encouraged to bring stuffed animals in need of a little TLC for a "Pet Patch-Up" clinic staffed by veterinarians and vet techs from Banfield Pet Hospital (5:30 to 7 p.m.). And at 6:15, kids can show off their best dog and cat impressions during Banfield's rousing "Howl and Meow" contest.

Also on hand: food carts from Pok Pok, Bunk Sandwiches, Verde Cocina, Pip's Donuts and more — plus the ever-popular elephant ears and a selection of local beer and wine for adults. Several beer, wine and cider purveyors will be offering free samples at each event.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m., and gates stay open until 8 p.m. Visitors may remain on zoo grounds until 8:30.
