Quillback rockfish are found along the Pacific coast from Alaska to southern California.

The life of a quillback rockfish

Quillback rockfish can grow up to 25 inches long and weigh up to seven pounds. Their lifespan varies, but they can live as long as 95 years! Most fish lay eggs, but quillback rockfish give birth to tiny live larval fish, which are about the size of an eyelash.

They are often found in rocky habitats and will stay in the same area for several years. Young quillback rockfish feed on plankton and very small crustaceans. Adults feed on crabs, shrimp, shellfish, small fish and fish eggs.

Predators include seabirds, sea lions and seals as well as larger fish such as lingcod, salmon and cabezon.
