Brown Rockfish are found on the Pacific coast from the Gulf of Alaska to central Baja California.

The life of a brown rockfish

Brown rockfish can grow up to 22 inches long, weigh up to six pounds and live 25 to 34 years. Most fish lay eggs, but brown rockfish give birth to tiny live larval fish, which are about the size of an eyelash. Brown rockfish sometimes mate with other fish species, including quillback and copper rockfish.

Young brown rockfish eat plankton and small crustaceans. Adults eat crabs, shrimp and small fish. They hunt by ambush to surprise their prey. They are often found in bays of shallow water where they shelter among rocks and aquatic vegetation but can also be found as deep as 960 feet.

Predators include seabirds, marine mammals like sea lions and harbor seals and larger fish like king salmon and lingcod.
