Canary rockfish are found along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Mexico, most often on the central Oregon coast. They are named for their vibrant colors, which look like a canary’s bright feathers.
The life of a canary rockfish
Canary rockfish can grow up to 2.5 feet in length and weigh up to 10 pounds. Their lifespan varies, but they can live as long as 75 years. Most fish lay eggs, but canary rockfish give birth to tiny live larval fish, which are about the size of an eyelash.
Canary rockfish are most often found in waters 200 to 700 feet deep but can reach depths beyond 2,000 feet. Young canary rockfish eat very small crustaceans. Adult canary rockfish feed on fish including sanddabs, anchovies and other species of rockfish.
Predators include humans, seabirds, marine mammals like seals and sea lions, as well as larger fish like lingcod and bocaccio.
