Red Ape Reserve

White-cheeked gibbons swing overhead as they range indoors and out in this exhibit, which replicates the challenges and opportunities of their native Southeast Asian rainforest habitat. Visitors also learn about ongoing conservation work, primates' physical adaptations such as long arms and short thumbs, and research on orangutan intelligence.

Orangutans are currently off-view. The orangutan habitat is being redesigned to create a more enriching experience both for orangutans and visitors, and will reopen as Primate Forest in 2020. Learn more about this community-funded project.
