China rockfish are found along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to southern California. They are distinguished by a long bright yellow stripe that runs across their body.

The life of a China rockfish

China Rockfish can grow up to 18 inches long and weigh up to four pounds. They can live as long as 79 years. Most fish lay eggs, but China rockfish give birth to tiny live larval fish, which are about the size of an eyelash.

China rockfish are usually found in shallow water but can reach a depth of 420 feet. They live around rocky reefs and kelp forests and tend to stay in the same area for several years. They are solitary and do not travel or hunt in schools.

Young China rockfish eat very small crustaceans. Adult China rockfish eat shrimp, crabs, mollusks, small fish and brittle stars, a relative of the sea star.
Their sharp dorsal spines are mildly venomous. They stiffen their spines to appear bigger and more intimidating when threatened by predators like lingcod, sharks, dolphins and seals.
